In just five years Nexen Petroleum (UK) Limited has become one of the North Sea's foremost E&P businesses. They have an enviable record of exploration success and have made several operated discoveries, including Golden Eagle - the largest North Sea find in 10 years. They already have nine exploration and appraisal wells planned for 2010 and further activities include prospecting for opportunities around their existing CNS portfolio, new ventures across the whole UKCS and exploring across continental Europe as far as the Black Sea.

They have a core expertise in the Central North Sea where they operate the producing Buzzard, Scott/Telford and Ettrick fields and with 300,000 boepd they are the second largest North Sea liquids producer.

Position Overview

As Senior Geophysicist, you will be responsible for generating exploration prospects and appraisal evaluations through the interpretation and mapping of 2D and 3D seismic data and seismic attribute analysis.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Evaluate exploration opportunities ranging from Country to Basins, to the highest technical standard.
  • Interpret a variety of G&G data including 2D or 3D seismic, potential field and well data. Prepare time and depth maps and integrate other relevant geophysical and geological information to produce a complete subsurface evaluation.
  • Assist in the development of appropriate entry strategies for selected opportunities.
  • Work with the Uxbridge-based New Ventures team to identify and recommend potential New Ventures exploration opportunities.
  • Participate in, or lead, on-site technical evaluations in Europe.
  • Identify and develop opportunities in priority focus areas using business contacts and competitive business information sources.
  • Consult on other Worldwide Exploration projects & serve on various peer review groups.
  • Develop, maintain & leverage Industry/Professional/Government Agency relationships.
  • Co-ordinate geophysical work and monitor outsourced geophysical projects.
  • Provide geophysical input for area and well reviews, and maintain updated geophysical interpretations and maps.
  • Provide geophysical input and technical assessments to prepare drilling prospects.
  • Supervise geophysical aspects of seismic data acquisition and processing.
  • Ensure quality control of seismic data acquisition and processing.
  • Utilize risk analysis and concept software.
  • Mentor developing/junior employees.

Education/Experience

  • A Masters degree in Geophysics or Geology.
  • Currently working as a Geoscientist in a similar type role, with proven New Ventures/International exploration experience.
  • Atlantic Margin and European basin experience of benefit for New Ventures work.
  • A track record of Basin and Play analysis, prospect generation (significant seismic interpretation and mapping expertise), and volumetrics/risking.
  • An ability to use geophysical, geological and engineering data to the best possible advantage of the company.
  • Ability to quickly integrate data and judge quality opportunities, with a strong business overprint.
  • A strong understanding of advanced geoscience concepts, to include structural, facies and sequence stratigraphic analysis.
  • Experience in performing risk/uncertainty assessments.
  • Demonstrated history of positive teamwork, and ability to contribute in a team environment.
  • Excellent English communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills.
  • Specialist skills in rock physics modeling or depth conversion.
  • Proficient in the use of geoscience software: Landmark Interpretation suite (OpenWorks/SeisWorks/RokDoc), 3D Visualization (GeoProbe), UNIX-LINUX, ArcGIS, MS Office, and mapping software.
  • Knowledge of other geophysical interpretation systems desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills and commercial understanding.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally on a periodic basis.
